CL:AIRE is pleased to announce the publication of the PFAS Remediation Technology Evaluation Framework. The framework was developed by Geosyntec Consultants for the Environment Agency as part of a project called Lines of Evidence to Assess the Effectiveness of PFAS Remediation Technologies. The framework will help to develop a more robust and consistent regulatory approach to PFAS remediation across England. An overview fact sheet, four case study fact sheets and a 30 minute video have been created to help with the understanding and use of the framework. These materials are available on the PFAS Remediation Technology Evaluation Framework page on CL:AIRE’s website.

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has published two new pieces of PFAS research. One is a rapid review of the health impacts from industrial sources of PFAS, available to download here. The other provides more general PFAS information and is available to download here.

Both pieces of research have been added to the CL:AIRE PFAS dedicated webpage.

Environment Agency updates BAT guidance

image

The Environment Agency has updated its ‘Best available techniques’ (BAT) guidance. BAT means the available techniques which are the best for preventing or minimising emissions and impacts on the environment.

The European Commission produces BAT reference documents or BREF notes. Any that were published before 1 January 2020 apply in the UK. The European Commission has also published ‘BAT conclusions’ (BATC) documents which are legal requirements that an operation must meet. From 1 January 2020, UK BATC documents started to be produced – see UK BATC. These will have the same legal status as the EU BATC. The UK regulators have agreed cross-cutting BATC interpretation guidance for the implementation of BAT and interpreting common issues arising in the interpretation of BREFs and BATC.
