The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency have recently published Best Available Technique (BAT) guidance in relation to environmental permits. The guidance details what BAT are, when you must follow them, how to propose alternatives and how to refer to them in your environmental permit application.
