A written Ministerial Statement was published in Parliament confirming the ambitious suite of Environment Act targets. The targets will deliver on the government’s commitment to leave the environment in a better state than it was found in by tackling some of the biggest pressures.
The targets will ensure progress on: clean air; clean and plentiful water; less waste and more sustainable use of resources; a step change in tree planting; a better marine environment; halting and reversing the decline of nature; and a more diverse, resilient natural environment.
The targets are stretching and will require action across Government, business and society. In turn this will support action to tackle climate change, restore the natural capital and protect the landscapes and green spaces. Government will set out plans to deliver the targets, including details about interim targets, in the Environmental Improvement Plan which we will be published by 31 January 2023.
