To facilitate prompt clean-up of contamination the Environment Agency is planning to republish its regulatory position statement (RPS): ‘Treat small volumes of contaminated soil and groundwater: RPS 215’ in October 2024.
The update will address feedback from industry that the current RPS did not allow in situ treatment of groundwater. To resolve this, the RPS will be updated to allow groundwater activities that result from the established remediation techniques.
In addition, the Environment Agency is planning updates and improvements to its land contamination pages on GOV.UK. New guides and updates are planned for later this year/early 2025:
• improvements to the Land contamination: technical guidance collection page
• an introductory guide to land contamination aimed at non-specialists
